What is a Chinese Corner ?

Our Chinese Corner

English Corner is an established concept in China for an English meet-up, therefore our Chinese Corner is a spin-off of that. It is most suitable for:

  • Foreigners who want to practice Chinese with the locals, mingle, and discuss Chinese culture

  • Chinese people who are enthusiastic to help with Chinese language, share Chinese culture, and make friends from different backgrounds

Every meeting has a theme. Not as deep as our English Corner, because foreigners' Chinese tends to be on the lower level than our Chinese friends' English. (truth!) Though if you're on the intermediate and advanced level, there's a bunch of locals who are more than happy to talk to you in Chinese. The proportion of the participants is around 40% foreigners and 60% locals.

In the past we've talked about food, travel, hobbies, movies — and we relate them to China and anything Chinese as much as we can. We have also learned how to play Mahjong and had a traditional Chinese dance performance. The group activity is led by my Chinese friend, Zoe.

Our foreign visitors also tend to be more diverse than our English Corner (whose foreigners tend to be people from English speaking countries). In the past we've had people from the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Burma/Myanmar
  • Canada
  • China
  • France
  • Malaysia
  • Mexico
  • Nepal
  • the Netherlands
  • Pakistan
  • Russia
  • South Korea
  • Thailand
  • the UK
  • the US
  • Uzbekistan
  • Vietnam

It's true that in a way the whole of China can be your Chinese Corner lol, but this is the microcosm of that. I truly think that our Chinese Corner provides a unique experience that you can't find anywhere else. Don't worry about your Chinese level, just come and experience the melting pot of bilingualism, united by things we have in common rather than our differences.
